Carmilla felt her girlfriends grip as she briefly searched her eyes for any symptoms of anything that might give what is happening away. It was hard to narrow this down, even with LaF’s comment about her heart being small.
“Okay so I have no idea how this is even working right now but I’m telling you I can see your whole nervous system. Everything. It’s like that game Mortal Kombat, you know where you have that ability to see x-ray vision mode and…”
“This is hardly the moment to talk about such things”, Perry interjected. She was clearly showing signs of stress and an urge to clean was rising. “How any of us are staying sane right now I don’t know. Laura just stuck her blood in LaF’s eye and now LaF is some sort of robot eye? Carmilla is breaking the furniture in her mother’s old house and Laura now, apparently has a small heart? What’s next?”
There was a moment of silence as Carm looked around the kitchen. LaF and Laura looking at one another and Perry clearly in distress. All of them had been through so much. The odd behaviour from Laura and now the concern over the size of her heart? Suddenly the Carm needed to get out of the small kitchen.
“I’m telling you your heart is super small. It’s beating and everything but small. Like a walnut. I think it’s also glowing? I’m not sure on that but it almost looks magical.” LaF kept staring and at that moment Carm walked out the kitchen. Stumbling over the pillows Perry and LaF had left in the living room she went to catch herself on the door frame and her grip cracked the wood clean in half. “What the…?”, the wood crumbled like dust in her hand. It was almost effortless. Strength she had never experienced before.
“Where are you going?” Perry gasped when she saw the crack in the frame.
“Upstairs.” Carm blew the dust off her hand. There was no waiting for a sarcastic comment from Perry. Instead she headed up to the main bedroom and closed the door behind her. “Where is it, where is it, where is it…” the door wasn’t looked but Carm knew LaF and Perry would never come in here which means she had free reign to tear apart all the bookshelves did she found what she was looking for. Book after book as thrown onto the bed. Anything that would be considered useful or could help Laura.
It wasn’t until every shelf was stripped clean that Carm cleared a patch on the crimson silk sheets and started with the first tattered old book about how it is possible to exchange one life for another.

“So…we didn’t get the hot chocolate which is okay and all but…” LaF looked up. “Carmilla is upstairs. She’s moving a lot. I think she’s angry but I can’t see a heartbeat or detect emotion so I can’t tell.”
